An energy-saving elevator is provided to be stably operated even during accidents by installing an uninterruptible power supply at a lower end of a hoistway. An energy-saving elevator includes an elevator compartment, a balance weight(20), a weight supply unit(30), and a control unit(40). The control unit supplies a weight to the balance weight from the weight supply unit according to the weight of the elevator compartment or discharges the weight to the weight supply unit from the balance weight. When the elevator compartment is lifted up, the entire weights of passengers or mounted cargo in the elevator compartment and the weight are supplied to the balance weight so that the entire weight of the elevator compartment is heavier than the weight of the balance weight. The weight is discharged from the balance weight to lower the elevator compartment so that the entire weight of the elevator compartment can be lighter than the weight of the balance weight.
