(S)-2-aryl-1,3-propanediol and its intermediate, (5)-3-acetoxy-2-aryl-propan ol carbamate, represented by formulae (I) and (II), respectively, have pharmaceutically useful activity against centra l nervous system disorders including nervous myalgia, ep ilepsy and cerebral apoplexy, wherein, R is (a), (b), (c), (d), (e), (f), (g), (h), (i) or (j), wherein X is an oxygen atom or 3 sulfur ato m; and Y represents a halogen element, trifluoromethyl, or a lower alkyl group contai ning one to three carbon atoms.
