Polymers are usually prepared by mass polymerization in the presence of a solvent, where several problems may occur. Because of great release of heat during polymerization, the control of morphological structure of a polymer becomes difficult. Mechanical stability of thus prepared materials is reduced very much with porosity greater than 65 vol. %. Polymers prepared by radical polymerization of emulsions with a high degree of internal phase (HIPE) of water-in-oil type have a homogeneous and open cellular structure and a controlled degree of porosity which can exceed 90 vol. % of the complete material. In spite of high porosity, they are mechanically and chemically stable, which enables their application for separation of biomolecules, for carriers with controlled release, for the purposes of chemical synthesis and as a material for absorption of liquids.
|
