System and method for detecting dental caries

A system for the detection of dental caries on a tooth includes a conductor to conduct radiation to the tooth, a collector to collect radiation reflected from or transmitted through the tooth and transmitting the collected radiation to a detector. The detector compares the intensity at several wavelengths of the collected radiation with a set of predetermined intensity values that correspond to the presence or absence of caries to enable a diagnosis of the presence or absence of caries on the tooth.
