The portable data storage device is coded or otherwise limited so that use of the portable data storage device is only possible within the particular system for which the portable data storage device was issued. The system is limited to specified geographical locations or areas. The method comprises issuing a portable data storage device to a user for use within a food outlet system, assigning value information to the portable data storage device, presenting the portable data storage device at a food outlet in order to identify the user to the system, ordering at least one item from the food outlet in a transaction, accessing the data stored on the portable data storage device to verify the particulars of the transaction, filling the order subject to the verification of the particulars of the transaction and updating the value information on the portable data storage device. The method also includes a reward system to encourage particular behaviour by the user eating or at least purchasing more healthy foods or beverages.
