Antiviral inhibitions of HIV-1 capsid proteins

A method of evaluating the antiviral activity of a test compound is disclosed, comprising: a) contacting said test compound with Gag283 or a fragment that includes the C-terminal end of the N-terminal domain of a capsid protein, b) determining ability of said test compound to bind to the apical cleft near the C-terminal end of the N-terminal domain of the capsid protein, and c) evaluating the antiviral effect of said compound. Therapeutically effective amounts of compounds that bind to the apical cleft near the C-terminal end of the N-terminal domain of the HIV capsid protein are utilised in the manufacture of medicaments for the treatment of HIV infection and AIDS.
