The system has a control unit (12) for controlling an internal combustion engine and for respectively increasing and reducing work provided by two banks of cylinders (2, 3) of the engine. One bank of cylinders (2) emerges out in particle filters (17) to be regenerated so that exhaust gas temperature crossing the particle filters is increased. The control unit controls the regeneration of the particle filters by modulating fuel injection in the cylinders. An independent claim is also included for a method for regeneration of a particle filter of an internal combustion engine.
