<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the size and/or the direction of paper by using a solar battery by arranging the solar battery on a paper tray such as an automatic document feeder ADF and a manually feeding tray. <P>SOLUTION: A digital complex machine 1 has a document placing tray 13 for setting a document, the solar battery 11 arranged on an upper surface of the document placing tray 13 and covering a partial area with the document set in the document placing tray 13 and a detecting means for detecting the size and/or the direction of the document from an electric power quantity generated by the solar battery 11.
