PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shift range control part 3 capable of surely switching a speed change mode with high followability while avoiding wasteful electric power consumption by reducing load of a motor 4 in a range switching device 1. SOLUTION: Rotation of a motor 4 is converted into reciprocation by a ball screw mechanism 5 and rotates a detent lever 40. A spool 7 connected with the detent lever 40 moves in an axial direction and switches the speed change mode of an automatic transmission 12. While rotating the detent lever 40 energized for respective range by a detent mechanism 9, if a new request range requiring its reverse rotation is issued, the shift range control part 3 temporarily stops the detent lever 40 at a range position closest to a movement position and then starts rotation from the stopped range to a requested range after the change.
