In a method for preparing functionalized 5-membered ring heterocycles (A) by reacting a substrate (B) with an electrophile (E), hydrogen acceptor (HA) and alkali metal component (AMC), the new feature is that at any time when HA and AMC are present together in the mixture, then (B) and (E) are also present in at least stoichiometric amount, with respect to HA. An independent claim is included for (A) prepared by the new method.
