PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve visual incongruity without using a field memory in a display image generated when the mean luminance of an image signal is changed widely at each field, in a contrast improving technology by a conventional visual model. SOLUTION: A characteristic detector generates a characteristic detecting signal to express the characteristic of the luminance of an input image signal. A mean luminance detecting circuit detects the mean luminance of a field unit of the image signal. A control signal generating circuit generates a signal to calculate the field difference of mean luminance and to control luminance correction. A luminance correction circuit conducts the correction of the luminance from the image signal and the characteristic detecting signal according to the control signal.
