PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a position detector which can detect stain by changing a distance between a scale and a light emitting/receiving part and can improve a limit of reading, and to provide a liquid ejector. SOLUTION: The position detector 50 which detects a position of an object to be detected 31 is equipped with the light emitting part 61 which ejects light, the scale 51 where both a translucent part 53a which passes the light ejected from the light emitting part 61 and a light blocking part 53b which blocks the light from the light emitting part 61 are arranged alternately, the light receiving part 63 which is set at the opposite side to the light emitting part 61 via the scale 51 and outputs an electrical signal according to a quantity of received light, and a scale moving mechanism 70 which separates the scale 51 from the light emitting part 61 or the light receiving part 63 by moving the scale 51 between the light emitting part 61 and the light receiving part 63.
