PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a flat display device that enables a reduction in misalignment without requiring formation of a fitting member or a penetrating hole in a panel, and enables a reduction in size of an ineffective area surrounding an effective area of the flat display device like a frame. SOLUTION: The display device is configured so that a first panel and a second panel are opposed to each other and the peripheries of the panels are bonded to each other with a bonding element. The display device is produced by: (A) preparing a second holding plate that is to be opposed to a first holding plate and is movable in the direction of the normal to the first holding plate; (B) setting the first holding plate in the horizontal direction; (C) placing the first panel on the first holding plate and placing the second panel over the first panel with the bonding element placed in between while aligning the second panel with respect to the first panel; (D) placing the second holding plate on the second panel; and (E) heating the whole of the first holding plate, the first panel, the bonding element, the second panel and the second holding plate to bring the bonding element into a flowable state, and then effecting the bonding by cooling the whole.
