PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method capable of measuring easily and quickly the amount of a stored object such as coal stored in a storage tank, and a measuring device. SOLUTION: This measuring device 1, which is a measuring device used for measuring the amount of the stored object 6 comprising many solid objects stored in piles in the storage tank 5, is equipped with a string-shaped member 2 having a scale, a case 3 having an opening on the surface mounted on the tip of the string-shaped member, and a light source 4 stored in the case. The case 3 lowered vertically from the upper end of the storage tank 5 toward the lower end reaches the surface of the stored object 6 and falls, and thereby the upper end of the storage tank is prevented from being illuminated with light from the light source 4, to thereby determine that the case 3 has reached the surface of the stored object 6.
