PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for pickling a stainless hot rolled steel material where pickling treatment is efficiently performed using a hydrochloric acid solution, and the pickling time can be reduced, and to provide a method for producing a stainless hot rolled steel material using the pickling method. SOLUTION: When a stainless hot rolled steel material is pickled with a pickling solution, the pickling solution is a hydrochloric acid solution comprising at least one or more selected from Fe ions, Cr ions and Ni ions in such a manner that the total content of the respective ions of Fe, Cr and Ni is 50 to 200 g/L, and further comprising nickel chloride and sodium chloride of 10 to 100 g/L. The stainless hot rolled steel material can be obtained by subjecting a hot rolled sheet or a hot rolled-annealed sheet composed of a ferritic stainless steel to preliminary descaling treatment, and thereafter performing the above pickling.
