PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system for freezing and thawing capable of shortening a treatment time required for freezing and thawing, and a method for freezing and thawing. SOLUTION: The system for freezing and thawing comprises a freezing and thawing tank 3 forming a cold-brine circuit B1 with a cold-brine tank 11 connected to an absorption refrigerator 10 and also a hot-brine circuit B2 with a hot-brine tank 12 connected to the coolant line of the absorption refrigerator 10, connected to both the cold/hot-brine tanks 11 and 12 so as to allow the switching of the flow of the cold brine and the hot brine, and carrying out solid-liquid separation of frozen and thawed sludge by alternately freezing and thawing introduced untreated sludge, wherein the cold-brine can indirectly be brought into contact with a thermal storage agent C for the cold brine placed on the cold-brine circuit B1 to keep the cold brine at a predetermined temperature by heat storage latent heat (cold heat) possessed by this thermal storage agent C for the cold brine.
