PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for drying sludge which enables an efficient and low-cost drying of various kinds of sludge by securing a large treatment capacity and a significant reduction in trouble and time required for maintenance for their drying and reduction in volume. SOLUTION: The apparatus for drying the sludge comprises a sludge charging part 13 on the upward side, a primary drying part 11 by a drum dryer 2 in a drying casing 10 having a dried sludge removal part 15 on the downward side and a secondary drying part 12 by a horizontal agitation dryer 3. The drum dryer 2 is set so as to deposit the sludge M0 on the surface of a heating drum 20 rotationally driving around a horizontal shaft core to scrape it by a scraper 22. The horizontal agitation dryer 3 is set so as to include a plurality of agitation blades 31 on the outer periphery of a heating cylinder shaft 30, place a sludge introduction part 3a directly beneath the drum dryer 2, receive primary dried sludge M1 falling from the drum dryer 2 to heat while agitating it and remove it as secondary dried sludge M2.
