A method of thermal monitoring and control of (1,3) of an electric motor (5) comprises a direct measurement of motor temperature (2). The motor power for normal operation is determined and the power is reduced (4) if the motor temperature exceeds a given threshold value until the temperature again falls below the threshold. Preferably the re-increase in motor power is carried out in a stepwise manner. An independent claim is also included for a device for the above method.
