PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent element excellent in productivity, capable of preventing gases such as oxygen and steam from intruding into an organic electroluminescent layer low in resistance against oxygen and steam, and of remarkably improving light extraction efficiency. SOLUTION: In this organic electroluminescent element, a transparent electrode, an organic electroluminescent layer, a negative electrode, and a sealing material are formed on a transparent base material in that order. The organic electroluminescent element is characterized in that a layer having an uneven shape is formed between the transparent base material and the transparent electrode; a barrier rib is formed around an edge part and between the transparent base material and the sealing material; the barrier rib is adjacent to at least either of the transparent base material and the sealing material; and a steam transmission coefficient is not greater than 1×10<SP>-5</SP>g m/m<SP>2</SP>/day.
