PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an emulsifier for emulsion polymerization which does not contain a polyoxyalkylene chain as a hydrophilic group, provides good emulsion stability during polymerization, and provides a polymer emulsion which is excellent in mechanical stability and chemical stability and provides a film excellent in various properties such as gloss, adhesiveness, and heat resistance. SOLUTION: The emulsifier for emulsion polymerization is represented by general formula (1): R-O-(G)n, wherein R represents a hydrocarbon group; G represents a residue of a monosaccharide; and n is 1-30.
