Cleaning device (10) has carrying element (15) to take cleaning parts and cleaning part (16) itself which extends the whole width of roller to be cleaned. Cleaning element extending over width of roller is in contact with the roller along at least one placement line and has at least one scraping part (17) lying positively on roller to be cleaned and thereby defining one or more placement lines. Each placement line runs obliquely to rotational axis of roller. Method involves firstly producing relative movement between cleaning element and the roller to be cleaned. Secondly, the coat of the roller is cleaned. Entire width of roller has dirt removed by scraping parts and dirt is immediately carried from conveyor part by scrapers.
