<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an LED backlight device capable of solving insufficient luminance of an outer periphery of a screen while suppressing an increase in the number of LEDs to be mounted or an unnecessary increase in power consumption without increasing the size or cost of an image display apparatus to be mounted. <P>SOLUTION: A plurality of LEDs 12 are arranged, for example, grid-likely, and a plurality of supplementary LEDs 13 for supplementing an optical quantity are arranged in one column on the outer peripheral portion. The supplementary LEDs 13 are driven at a current lower than that of the LEDs 12.
