PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a valve gear for an internal combustion engine, suppressing control dispersion between cylinders of a variable valve train. SOLUTION: In this valve gear, a relationship between widths A1, A2 of a journal portion 20 of a cam shaft 12 and a journal hole portion 21 rotatably holding the journal portion 20 is established so that at least the width of the journal hole portion 21 at its side of receiving load from the journal portion 20 is longer than that of the journal portion 20. Thus, even when the cam shaft 12 is shifted to the axial direction with the operating force of the variable valve train 45, the journal portion 20 is simply displaced in the journal hole portion 21 and a supporting distance between the journal portion 20 supported in the journal hole portion 21 and the cam 17 remains unchanged.
