PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make an exhaust flow rate to be approximately zero without stopping both an intake valve and an exhaust valve to promote increase in temperature of a catalyst. SOLUTION: The internal combustion engine for a vehicle has a variable valve gear which can vary valve lift characteristics of the intake valve 1 and the exhaust valve. In fuel cut after the start of deceleration of the vehicle, a variable control of the valve lift characteristics of the intake valve 1 and the exhaust valve is performed so that gas in a cylinder is returned to the cylinder after the gas flows out of the cylinder. Since a time where the cylinder gas has stayed in the cylinder, an intake pipe or an exhaust pipe is elongated, the exhaust flow rate passing through the catalyst is reduced to promote increase in temperature of the catalyst.
