PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for retaining a braking force of a vehicle capable of suppressing non-operation of the hill-hold control when a brake pedal is operated for performing the hill-hold control. SOLUTION: In the braking force retaining device, a CPU sets the brake hydraulic pressure BP in each wheel cylinder to be the reference brake hydraulic pressure BBP, and sets the threshold KBP by adding the reference value BV to the reference brake hydraulic pressure BBP when the elapsed time after the vehicle is stopped based on the step-on operation of the brake pedal reaches the reference time BT. When the brake hydraulic pressure BP in each wheel cylinder is reduced, the CPU re-sets the reference brake hydraulic pressure BBP to a lower value according to the reduction of the brake hydraulic pressure BP, and also re-sets the threshold KBP to a lower value. Thereafter, when the brake hydraulic pressure BP in each wheel cylinder reaches the threshold KBP by the step-on operation of the brake pedal, the CPU performs the hill-hold control.
