PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for detecting the directions of arrangement of wells of a microplate. SOLUTION: A stage 8 is horizontally moved in such a way that an immersion objective lens of an inverted fluorescence microscope may generate a horizontal trajectory 25 of a predetermined shape and size to the bottom surface of the microplate 20. Reflected light from the bottom surface of the microplate 20 is measured while the immersion objective lens generates the trajectory 25. The location of a well wall 23 traversed by the trajectory 25 are detected on the basis of the intensity of the reflected light. Intersecting cross shapes 24 in the well wall 23 are detected from among squares formed by the trajectory 25 on the basis of the detected location of the well wall 23. Plate X-axes 27 and plate Y axes 28 intersecting at the centers of the cross shapes 24, i.e., the directions of arrangement of the wells 22, are detected. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
