PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a friction material which is a friction material made from a starting material partially containing cutting dust produced in the course of production of a friction material or cutting dust obtained by cutting spent friction materials, produces not increased brake squeal or foreign sound in spite of containing cutting dust, and is easy to produce. SOLUTION: The friction material is one made from a starting material partially containing cutting dust produced by cutting molded friction materials produced by molding a mixture of a fibrous base, a friction modifier, and a binder or cutting dust obtained by cutting spent friction materials, wherein the cutting dust is kneaded and granulated with rubber to form granules, and the granules are contained as part of the raw material for the friction material.
