PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-performance catalytic body in which a catalyst can be formed firmly on a base material by using an easy manufacturing method and to provide an air treatment apparatus using the catalytic body. SOLUTION: The catalytic body is provided at least with: the base material 5; and a catalyst layer 8 which is formed on the base material 5 and contains a catalyst component 6, in which a metal oxide is used singly or together with a noble metal, as a principal component and bismuth oxide 7. When bismuth oxide 7 is heated at around 820°C of the melting point thereof, bismuth oxide becomes porous and sticks firmly to other materials since the volume of bismuth oxide increases greatly. As a result, the porous catalyst layer 8 excellent in adhesive strength can be formed easily only by applying a material containing the catalyst component and bismuth oxide to the base material 5 such as stainless steel without pretreating the base material, and firing the base material thus applied at around the melting point. A large amount of the catalyst component 6 is exposed on the surface of the porous catalyst layer 8 and the diffusibility of oxygen or a reactive gas is improved to obtain high catalytic characteristics.
