PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface protecting film useful for a metal plate, a resin plate, a wood decorative plate, a face plate, a building material, a car part, particularly for a liquid crystal plate and an electrical electronics part, which shows high rigidity, a low powdering property, an excellent anti-staining property, a high adhesion to a metal and a high durable stability. SOLUTION: The surface protecting film comprises a linear polyethylene as a substrate layer, wherein a density, a melt mass flow rate, and a molecular weight distribution, namely a ratio of a number average molecular weight to a weight average molecular weight are fallen within specific ranges, a calculated molecular weight in the linear polyethylene is 10<SP>5</SP>or more, a calculated molecular weight to a methyl group amount contained in a moiety of 10<SP>6</SP>or more molecular weight is 10<SP>3</SP>or more and a ratio of a methyl group amount contained in a moiety of 10<SP>4</SP>or less molecular weight is less than 1.0.
