PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent control of the meandering of a belt from becoming unstable in the operation for placing the belt in contact with a fixation roller, and the operation for separating the belt from the fixation roller. SOLUTION: When the main assembly of an image forming apparatus is kept on standby, the fixation roller 1 remains stopped, whereas the belt is continuously rotated at 50 mm/s by a belt motor, which drives the belt for standby, while being kept separated from the fixation roller 1. Then, at the same time as the main assembly begins a printing operation, the fixation roller 1 begins to rotate at 50 mm/s, which is a second rotational speed, and the belt begins to be pressed upon the fixation roller 1. Then, as the pressure gradually builds up and reaches its preset full strength, the rotational speed of the fixation roller is increased to a first fixation speed, or 200 mm/s, before paper is introduced into a fixation nip.
