PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive compact discharge lamp lighting device in which excessive current flowing to the lamp is controlled and wear of electrode is prevented to extend its life span. SOLUTION: The discharge lamp lighting device 1 comprises an inverter circuit provided with a switching circuit 4 and a high-voltage transformer 5, a booster circuit 3 which is connected to the prestage of the inverter circuit, and a control circuit 2 which controls action of the switching circuit 4 of which input voltage line (a) has a constant-voltage circuit 10 which is connected to an ON/OFF switching circuit 6. A switching signal buffer circuit 8, which relays control signal for switching circuit GS, is prepared between the control circuit 2 and the switching circuit 4. Predetermined drive voltage (b) is supplied to the control circuit 2 without going passing through the intermediary of the ON/OFF switching circuit 6, while the drive voltage (c) is supplied to the switching signal buffer circuit 8 via the ON/OFF switching circuit 6.
