PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which has excellent electrostatic durability and provides high image quality and a longer operating life without causing scratches on a photoreceptor and image defects even when it is used for a long period of time. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes a photoreceptor, a charging device configured to uniformly charge the surface of the photoreceptor, an image exposing device configured to perform image exposure of the uniformly charged photoreceptor to form an electrostatic latent image, a developing device configured to develop the electrostatic latent image, a device to transfer the developed image, and a cleaning device configured to remove the transfer residual toner on the photoreceptor. The image forming apparatus is characterized in that the photoreceptor has a photosensitive layer containing at least a charge generating substance and a charge transport substance on a conductive substrate, the photosensitive layer contains a charge transport substance expressed by general formula (1), the cleaning device has a brush with a loop-shaped tip, which rotates while being brought into contact with the photoreceptor, and the loop-shaped tip side of the brush is directed to the upstream side of the rotation direction of the brush from the root part.
