PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of removing toner particles which have come in the minute ruggedness of an intermediate transfer belt. SOLUTION: A carrier liquid coating mechanism 90 is provided on the upstream side of a secondary transfer unit 80 on the intermediate transfer belt 70. Carrier liquid is applied to the intermediate transfer belt 70 from the carrier liquid coating mechanism when cleaning operation is performed. A secondary transfer roller 81 is constituted to rotate while making a speed difference from the intermediate transfer belt 70 when the cleaning operation is performed. Furthermore, bias having a polarity for moving the toner particles from the intermediate transfer belt 70 to the secondary transfer roller 81 is applied to the secondary transfer roller 81 side when the cleaning operation is performed.
