PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus and an image forming for releasing lock of carriage surely upon user setting in the image reading apparatus equipped with a lock mechanism of the carriage, by which movement and vibration during transportation of the carriage adjusted with high precision is prevented, and damage and impairment of the carriage can be restricted. SOLUTION: The typical constitution of the image reading apparatus includes a manuscript glass 4 for mounting the manuscript, a manuscript platen 5 for biasing the mounted manuscript to the manuscript glass 4, a carriage 10 arranged at the lower portion of the manuscript glass 4 for reading the manuscript mounted on the manuscript glass 4 while the carriage 10 moves, and a lock mechanism (nail unit 14, and carriage lock 20) for fixing the carriage 10 onto the device frame. While the carriage 10 is fixed and locked by the lock mechanism, a released condition in which the fixation state is released in the carriage caused by the lock mechanism is caused by the manuscript pressing operation of the manuscript platen 5.
