FIELD: physics. ^ SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to strain gauges and can be used for monitoring the state of high-strength composite materials and structures made from such materials. The strain gauge has a strain-sensing element in form of a carbon filament. The carbon filament is built into a matrix from electrically insulating polymer material. The carbon filament inside the matrix consists of particles with critical length of 0.5-1 mm. The carbon filament is made from high-modulus carbon fibre, and the material of the matrix has modulus of elasticity two times or more, less than the modulus of elasticity of the carbon fibre. The ends of the carbon filament are joined to electrical wires for connection to recording apparatus. The points of connection are built into the polymer matrix. When making the strain gauge the beginning and the end of the carbon filament are joined to electrical wires for connection to recording apparatus. The carbon filament is then put into a bundle made from glass- or organic-fibre, impregnated with a binding substance, hardened and subjected to 6-7 loading-unloading cycles. ^ EFFECT: increased strain sensitivity and range of measured deformations. ^ 5 cl, 2 dwg
