An apparatus includes (a) an electroporation chamber, (b) an electrode (402) in operative relation with the chamber, and (c) a conductive and water permeable barrier (404) in operative relation with the electrode, the barrier being configured to substantially prevent cells in a sample being electroporated within the chamber from coming into contact with the electrode during use.
