The proposed method for determining the orientation of a film surface consists in transmitting non-polarized optical radiation through the film, transmitting the radiation passed through the film through a polarizer and a modulator connected in series, measuring the intensity of the radiation at the output of the modulator by using a photodetector, and dividing, by filters, the output signal of the photodetector into two components such as a component with the modulation frequency and a component with the double modulation frequency. The polarizer is installed so that the double modulation frequency component of the output signal of the photodetector is distinctive from zero. The values of the said components are used for determining the orientation of the film surface relative to the vertical and horizontal surfaces.
