<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic type position detection device capable of detecting the position of an object to be detected such as a shift lever with high reliability by a magnetic method. Ž<P>SOLUTION: Magnetic sensor units 21a, 22a convert a direction of a magnetic field generated from magnets 62, 93 moved with a shift lever 15 to an electric signal corresponding to the direction between two operation positions (R position and N position) where the shift lever 15 should be detected, and obtain the two electric signal profiles different from each other. It is determined by an external ECU whether or not the two electric signal profiles are varied according to a pattern scheduled between the two operation positions, and the electric signal is provided for detection of the operation position of the shift lever 15 when it is varied.
