A linear scanning head for a computed radiography imaging plate scanner uses a monolithic array of semiconductor lasers 61 to provide a plurality of separate output beams 65 for focusing on an imaging plate and stimulating emission of radiation therefrom. A photodetector array simultaneously detects emitted radiation from each of a plurality of pixels of the imaging plate. Each pixel corresponds to a single one of said separate output beams. It is then possible to individually stimulate and read individual pixels on the imaging plate.
