The transparent portion (2) of the marking has an image on one side which includes a first pattern (21) of transparent and opaque surface regions alternating in at least one first direction, and an image on the opposite side (22) which includes a second pattern of parts of two or more images alternating in the first direction. The first pattern and the parts of at least one of the images in the second pattern are in register with each other when viewed from a given direction. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a first authenticity marking for a substrate, comprising a transparent having an image on one side which includes a first pattern of transparent and opaque surface regions alternating in at least one first direction, and having an image on the opposite side which includes a second pattern of parts of two or more images alternating in the first direction, the first pattern being congruent to the second pattern; and (2) a second authenticity marking for a substrate which is the same as the first marking, except that the first pattern is identical in shape or form to the second pattern.
