An exhaust system for an internal combustion engine having a plurality of cylinders (#1,#2,#3,#4) is disclosed. The exhaust system comprises a plurality of exhaust branch passages (2), an intermediate exhaust pipe section (3), a partition plate (11) and a downstream pipe section (5). Each exhaust branch passage (2) is in communication with a respective cylinder. The intermediate exhaust pipe section (3) forms a passage that is in communication with the exhaust branch passages (2). The partition plate (11) is provided in the intermediate exhaust pipe section (3) and divides the intermediate exhaust pipe section (3) into first and second flow paths (12,13). The partition plate (11) further includes a projection (15) positioned on a first surface thereof that is oriented so as to be generally perpendicular to the direction of exhaust flow. The partition plate (11) is disposed within the intermediate exhaust pipe section (3) so as to position the projection (15) in the first flow path (12).
