A method of measuring a mailpiece (M) is disclosed, which includes deflecting a laser beam (56; 58; 66) through an arc, determining an angle at which the laser beam (56; 58; 66) is currently directed, and calculating a dimension of the mailpiece (M) based at least in part on the determined angle.
