A rear discharge mower deck (100) has at least two cutting blades (115,116) mounted on vertical spindles (107,108) in cutting chambers (105,106), a fan (110) in a housing (104) mounted on the deck over the cutting chambers, and an inlet opening (111) between the cutting chambers and the fan housing. The surface area of the inlet opening may be between about 50% and about 80% of the surface area within the fan diameter. A stripper plate (114) may be on one edge of the inlet opening, and each cutting chamber has an upwardly sloping tunnel (120,121) to the inlet opening.
