973,969. Reels &c. G. F. LEBUS ROTARY TOOL TRUST, F. L. LEBUS, and F. L. LEBUS, Jun., [trading as LEBUS ROYALTY CO.]. Dec. 11, 1962 [Dec. 18, 1961], No. 46812/62. Heading B8M. In a method of providing a drum core with a continuous groove having helical and parallel sections in sequence, a sleeve 10, which is of a diameter to fit over the core and which has parallel grooving around its outer periphery, is severed into segments of complementary wedge shape, 40, 42 and 46, 48 which are secured in reverse order to the drum core together with segments 38, 44 to provide the continuous groove. Arcuate end filler bars are used to fill the gaps between the ends of the sleeve and the flanges of the drum, and to assist in the formation of the second cable layer. The width of the sleeve may be the same as the width of the drum to provide an " alternate rise grooving " or half a cable diameter less to provide a " conventional rise grooving." In either case part of one turn of the sleeve is cut away. Alternatively, from Fig. 2, cuts 26, 28, 30, 32 may be inclined to the axis of the sleeve with cuts 34, 36 parallel to the axis to provide a " bias cross-over " grooving system. |
