A vehicle seat assembly (10) includes a frame (26) for mounting the seat (10) to a vehicle. The seat assembly (10) also includes a seat pad (16) molded from a polymeric material and located proximate the frame (26). A trim cover (18) is disposed over the seat pad (16), and includes a seam (28) adjacent a side of the seat pad (16). An airbag assembly (20), which includes an airbag (22) and an inflator (24) configured to supply gas to the airbag (22), is also part of the seat assembly (10). A pad shield (32) covers at least a portion of the seat pad (16) for protecting it during deployment of the airbag (22). The pad shield (32) includes inner and outer panels (34, 36) which form a deployment channel (38) for the airbag (22), and thereby inhibit contact of the airbag (22) with the seat pad (16) as the airbag (22) deploys. A method of producing the vehicle seat is also disclosed. |
