To detect creep or slip of a wheel 12, a railway vehicle is provided with two transducer units 11, 14 arranged to be adjacent wheel 12 and rail 15 in use, each unit comprising a recording head 16, 17 which records a magnetic pulse in the wheel or rail which is picked up by the associated reading head 18, 19, the outputs from the reading heads being fed to a comparator 23, the output from which is used to give an indication of creep or slip or to control the brakes and/or motor acting on the wheel. The transducers are adjustable vertically to compensate for wear of the wheel and the distances d between the recording and reading heads 16, 18 and 17, 19 are equal. In Fig. 1, the recording heads are supplied with electric pulses at a constant frequency or at a frequency dependent on vehicle speed by pulsing unit 20 which also supplies signals to detector units 22 which receive signals from the reading heads and supply signals to the comparator proportional to the time delay between the initiating pulse and the reading head signal. In an alternative (Fig. 2, not shown) each transducer unit has an individual pulsing unit with an input from the associated reading head so that slip is indicated by a change in relative pulse frequency. To permit running in reverse a suitable switching circuit may be used or an additional reading or recording head may be provided adjacent the wheel and rail. More than one wheel may be provided with transducers. |
