Air is replaced with an insulating gas during the manufacture of an insulated glass unit, the glass unit having two parallel glass panes (74, 76) and a peripheral spacer (78) between them and defining an interpane space. An air replacement apparatus comprises first and second platens (12, 14) movable toward and away from each other, at least one carrying a peripheral resilient seal (38) that extends toward and peripherally seals to the other platen to define between them a sealed enclosure. A conveyor (46) moves a partially assembled insulating glass article into a gas replacement position between the platens, one pane (76) being separated from the spacer (78) at its bottom edge (86). The platens (12, 14) are closed upon each other to seal between them the glass article, an isulating gas being introduced into the enclosure and a mixture of insulating gas and air being exhausted from the enclosure. Further movement of the platens (12, 14) closes the lower edge (86) of the one glass pane (76) against the spacer (78) to seal the interpane space, the platens (12, 14) thereafter being opened and the completed glass article conveyed outwardly from between them.
