The engine has a combustion chamber (2), a control unit for receiving and transmitting information, and a variable compression ratio device varying a top dead center and a bottom dead center of a piston (1) between a maximum position and a minimum position. A fuel injector (3) injects fuel into the chamber along superposed layers (4, 5), having high and low permeability, respectively. Functioning modes of the engine are selected by the control unit following a cartography of speed of the engine according to the torque of the engine.
