In a press for separating liquids from solids, e.g. sewage sludge, material A, Fig. 4, to be deliquefied is fed in a wet plastic condition down a shoot 20 on to a wire screen 11 carried by a rotating drum 10, the material being compressed by a roller 25, broken and turned by a scraper 96, compressed again by a roller 26, and collected in a deliquefied condition by a scraper 60 attached to a pivotally mounted shoot 61 situated above a belt conveyer; Fig. 2 (not shown). Liquid removed from the material is collected by a trough 63 having a drain outlet, Fig. 2, the screen being periodically washed by a water spray 65 located above the trough, as shown. The screen 11 comprises wires 75, Fig. 5, of trapezoidal cross-section, Fig. 6 (not shown), which are looped at intervals around cross wires 77. The wall of the drum 10 supporting the screen is a perforated shell 73 having a configuration comprising alternate lobes 71 and flutes 72, the rollers 25, 26 having complementary convex lobes 80 such that the zones in which the material A is compressed are of substantial and constant peripheral length. The roller 25 is mounted on cranked levers 27, Fig. 1, journalled on the ends of a shaft 30, their other ends being coupled to one another by a tray 33 carrying weights 34 to load the roller. The roller 26 is mounted in a similar manner on cranked levers 36 and is loaded by weights 44 in a tray 43 attached to a pair of levers 40 carried by stub shafts 41, a lug 45 on each lever 40 bearing downwardly on the free end of the associated lever 36. Downward displacement of the rollers is limited by screws 47 on the levers 27, 36, the ends of the screws bearing against the frame of the machine when the limit is reached. The rollers are driven at a peripheral speed substantially equal to that of the drum 10 by a variable speed motor 50 coupled to the rollers through inter-meshing spur gears 54, 55, the shaft 30, and roller chains 57, 58, the gear 55 also meshing with a gear wheel 56 attached to the drum. Scrapers 87, 91 carried by arms 88, 92, respectively, cleanse the surfaces of the rollers, the arms being pivotally attached to the associated levers 27, 36. The perforations in the shell 73 are of trapezoidal cross-section to permit any material adhering to the screen to pass into the interior of the drum, access to which is provided by large perforations in the end walls of the drum. |
