PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a retardation film having properties as an A-plate or a B-plate as well as properties as a negative C-plate without using an alignment layer. SOLUTION: The retardation film comprises a substrate having properties as an A-plate or a B-plate as well as properties as a negative C-plate and a retardation layer having a rod-like compound, and is characterized in that the retardation layer is directly formed on the substrate and that the rod-like compound in the retardation layer generates random homogeneous alignment.
